Results of Second General Assembly were discussed at Ministry of Foreign Affairs

On September 9, 2019 in Nur-Sultan city, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Agriculture of Kazakhstan held a meeting with Islamic Organization for Food Security at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to discuss results of the Second General Assembly.
During the event, Vice Minister of Agriculture Gulmira Issayeva announced that institutional procedures of the organization have been completed. Currently 34 countries out of 56 member states of OIC joined IOFS.
Further strategic vision of the organizational activities had been developed, priority tasks identified and documents for further institutional development had been completed too.
General Director of IOFS Mr. Yerlan Baidaulet noted that 16 Resolutions that covered important institutional issues have been unanimously accepted.

Other issues discussed on the session were budget, approval of procedural and financial rules, principles of personnel regulation, 5-year plan of IOFS activities, 3-year investment in agricultural sector, and adoption of a new IOFS logo.
A scale of mandatory contributions had been adopted for 34 countries of IOFS.
At the Second General Assembly, activities of IOFS were also focused on problems common to the vast majority, given the possibilities to solve them within the organization itself on account of available resources and potential of the IOFS member countries.
According to Issayeva, grain is playing more and more important role in provision of food security, especially in regions dependent on import within the context of agro-provisional trade.
Member states of OIC receive around 20-25% of global grain import and 70% of flour. According to experts, population of Muslim countries will increase to 3 billion people by 2050, i.e. around 1/3 of the entire population on the planet.
Therefore, given the rapid population growth in Muslim countries, the dynamics of consumption and accordingly, imports of grain and flour to OIC member countries will continue to increase.
Based on this assumption, Kazakhstan delegation initiated establishment of a Grain Fund, which could help to meet needs of IOFS member states to ensure a step-by-step increase in mutual trade in grain crops produced in the member states.
Ambassador-at-large Mr. Kairat Lama Sharif informed on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, that in the final document adopted by the General Assembly of the IOFS, the participants praised the role of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Mr. Nursultan Nazarbayev, in ensuring food security in the Muslim world.
Participants of the General Assembly also emphasized that establishment of IOFS initiated by Mr. Nazarbayev with headquarters in Nur-Sultan, will positively affect the development of the agricultural sector in OIC countries, create favorable conditions for infrastructural integration and attract investment and food exports to Muslim countries.
